What is Fraxel and what does it treat?

fraxel3.jpg

Fraxel, or fractional skin resurfacing, is "The Laser of Youth". It is a medical laser light that goes deeper into the skin to treat sun damaged, scarred and aging skin. Fine lines, wrinkles, melasma, large pores, scars and stretch marks are reduced as collagen and elastin production is stimulated. Results are a smoother, brighter skin tone and texture - an overall more youthful and healthier complexion.

Now approved by FDA for treatment of scars and stretch marks.

How does it work?

A small sterilized handpiece, guided precisely over the area to be treated, pulses light onto the skin in an array of precisely controlled microbeams. These beams generate therapeutic heat to the deeper layers in the skin resulting in tissue coagulation below the skin's surface. This encourages a natural healing process promoting collagen and elastin production, and improving elasticity, tone and texture of damaged skin.

What to expect during treatment?

You will need to apply a numbing cream (EMLA, from your local pharmacist) an hour before treatment.
Treatment will generally take a few minutes to an hour depending on the area treated.
Safety glasses will be worn to protect the eyes. You will feel a sense of heat and a slight snapping on the skin.

How much downtime?

Redness and swelling for a couple of days, gradually decreasing over a week. Ice packs will be soothing and helpful.
Make-up can be applied after the 2nd day. Keep the skin very clean for first 48 hours. A topical antibiotic may be applied.
Best to keep out of the sun for 2-3 days. Use hydrocortisone cream if the skin becomes itchy.

What areas can be treated?

Face, neck, chest, hands and arms and any scar on the body including stretch marks.

How many treatments are required?

To see maximum benefit, 4-5 treatments are required with 4- 6 weeks between treatments. Longer time between treatments is acceptable ie. 2-3 months. You will notice positive changes in skin tone and texture even within a few days to a week post treatment. Improvements will continue for up to 6-12 months after. Maintenance is usually one treatment a year, depending on your skin care regime and sun exposure.

A consultation with Dr. Andre Kirsten will determine how Fraxel can help with your concerns.
